Brigham Young's schedule is tough enough that it will be a real challenge to get to 10 wins, but also just easy enough to ensure them a trip to a bowl game. The Cougars play tough games away from home at Utah State, Wisconsin, and Notre Dame. BYU also plays quality opponents at home such as Texas and Boise State. There's a good chance that they will upset either Texas or Boise State at home. BYU is No. 42 in the CFU Preseason SOS and the Cougars will need multiple upsets this season to finish in the top 25.
CFU writer Ron Clements believes that Navy could win up to 10 games this season, but their road schedule could keep them from accomplishing that. Navy has to play games at Indiana, Western Kentucky, Toledo, Notre Dame, and San Jose State; all of those opponents are rated higher than the Midshipmen in the CFU Preseason Rankings and they would have to win three of them to get to a double digit win season.
The Army vs Navy matchup will likely be a close call again this year. Even though Navy is picked to win and Army is only projected to win three games, this could easily be the year that Army breaks the streak. Last season’s matchup was closely contested and their styles make for a close game.
All together, three independents are projected to be bowl eligible in 2013. Old Dominion plays only a partial FBS schedule while in transition and will be playing a Conference USA schedule beginning 2014. Idaho and New Mexico State are a couple new independents out of the former Western Athletic Conference. The Vandals and Aggies are only projected to win a combined two games this season. ODU is projected to beat FBS independent Idaho.
