Radcliff, in his debut of carrying the load, seemingly has great vision on the field and can find the gaps much quicker and more naturally than other running backs on the Cardinals roster. He came through in the clutch as he put UL ahead in the fourth quarter against the Demon Deacons with his second touchdown of the game and garnered 51 of his rushing yards in the last stanza.
“I guess just natural instincts. Just trying to get to the holes. Hit the holes hard.” Radcliff said when asked about his field vision. “Whenever I see it I just get straight to it. Coach tells the assignment. You just have to believe in it and hit it at full speed, 100 miles an hour.”
The run game coordinator and offensive line coach is 24-year veteran Chris Klenakis, who came in this year from Iowa State to reunite with head coach Bobby Petrino. Klenakis was on Petrino’s staff in Arkansas from 2010 to 2011.
The line also bolsters an exceptional amount of experience with a total of 135 career starts and 156 games played (111 career starts before 2014). Against Wake Forest, the O-line looked better at the running game than pass protection as they clearly exuded power in the rushing attack.
For the year, Louisville is just averaging 152.2 rush yards per game for 82nd in the nation with just a 3.9 carry average, but with Radcliff in the starting lineup, the offense stepped it up to 215 yards on the ground with a 4.4 yard average (6.3 by Radcliff). He nearly had another 100-yard rushing game earlier this year against Murray State with a total of 97 yards and two touchdowns; his season high in 2013 was only 47 yards, but expect him to continue to carry the ball more after his breakout performance last Saturday.
