ESPN Analyst Kirk Herbstreit
Northern Illinois' BCS Berth in the Orange Bowl to face ACC Champion Florida State was not too surprising to me. I had them projected in early morning hours on Sunday in contradiction to projections of ESPN and CBS. ESPN analysts seemed shocked and angered, especially Kirk Herbstreit. Northern Illinois became the first MAC team to earn a BCS Bowl berth.

On the ESPN BCS Selection Show, Rece Davis asked Herbstreit, "With the rules being set this way. The rules also allow a team with five losses like Wisconsin to go. They allow Louisville to go. They are ranked ahead of both of them so what's your reaction to Northern Illinois being in a BCS game? "
He replied very distraughtly,
“...The fact that Northern Illinois is in the BCS in 2012 is really a sad state for college football and  where we are with the current system...They don't deserve to be in the BCS this year. Are you kidding me with Northern Illinois playing in the BCS? There's two things here that stand out. Northern Illinois, nobody even knew they were playing until they got to the Toledo game about two weeks ago. With the examples of Utah and TCU and BYU in the past and even Hawaii who got blown out by Georgia, they were a story for six or seven weeks. There was a build up. You could really look at their resume and say hey look they won this game or won that game.
Note Herbstreit avoiding talking about the worthiness of BCS berths by Wisconsin and Louisville. The record of the MAC vs the Big East this season was 3-4. Read more of Herbie's rant,
"With Northern Illinois and I love Jordan Lynch like you said and it is a great  team with Dave Doeren. But you are going to leave Oklahoma out to put Northern Illinois in to a BCS game? Are you kidding me? That to me of all the years we had these BCS discussions, putting a Northern Illinois or Kent State into the BCS this year would really be an injustice to these teams. Such as you just mentioned we have this other rule where we can't have more than two teams get into the BCS from one conference. Who came up with this rule? Whatever you do as BCS conference commissioners and however you want to give the money. Give the money to whoever you want to, but to leave out teams like Georgia and Florida and Texas A&M and Oklahoma. All of us want to see those teams in games that matter in the BCS Bowl games and you're going to give us NORTHERN ILLINOIS!"
Rece Davis pressed on about the worthiness of Wisconsin and Louisville in comparison, but Herbstreit refused to explain how the Badgers or Cardinals are deserving of BCS berths.
Herbstreit carried on until he flat-out disrespected NIU,
"...to put them in the BCS is an absolute joke to the rest of these teams. I can't even believe we are even having this discussion."

Video of ESPN Kirk Herbstreit's Absurd Rant

If Herbstreit is going to complain about NIU, then it would only be fair for him to do so about Louisville. I personally like both teams. I am just pointing out his bias.

The Huskies are 21-1 dating back to last season, the best record in the FBS since then. NIU's only loss was to dismal Iowa by one point, but let's not forget that Wisconsin only defeated Northern Iowa (FCS team) by just five points. The Huskies have won 12 straight since their only blemish.

New NIU head coach Rod Carey said,
"That's the great thing about college football and the way the system we're in right now works. Everybody gets an opinion. And every opinion deserves its time. And that's fine. I think we're in the opinion business right now...

You know what? You're in the MAC, every kid in this conference plays with a chip on his shoulder because they were told that they weren't good enough. That's consistent."

Herbie is correct! NIU is a good team and the MAC is a good, fun conference to watch. However, what a joke for them to get a BCS bowl bid. Kudos to the best in the business, tell em' Kirk!

Herbie is not correct.....he is biased against any D1 school that doesn't come from the Big conferences. For him the D1 has only about 30 to 40 teams that he recognizes...the rest for him don't exist. The fact that the BCS rules were followed and we ended up with NIU is horrible for him.......but you know what, he shouldn't be knocking NIU (a very classless move by what I once thought was class guy, but now appears to lack any class at all)......

Hey Herbie !

You blew your chances for going to Ohio State for Homecoming, I suggest you skip any visits to DeKalb as well. Bowl games may be about $$$$ and major colleges but college football in its purest form is about the David's, not the Golith's. Go Mt. Union !

So, I guess Rothlesberger being a MAC QB has no business playing in the NFL???? Herb and the other "big school lovers" need to realize that there are other teams in the country. Also, it would be easy to put those other schools in the bowl games, WIN THEIR CONFERENCE!!!!!!!!! Does he also feel that way about basketball??

Sorry guys, but i think Kirk is CORRECT! I am not trying to disrespect NIU but its not fair to the better conferences. There is not doubt in my mind that if NIU was in a conference like the PAC 10, B1G, ACC, SEC they would be at the bottom of everyone of those conferences.

As a graduate of NIU, I am concerned about the Orange Bowl bid, not because of the game itself but because of the contentiousness it has caused. Football is a fun game to play or watch but it is just that, a game. Herbstreit's comments on Sunday night were unprofessional and uncalled for. The system is the way it is and this is a LEGAL issue. To avoid a Congressional investigation of the NCAA and the AQ conferences concerning anti trust issues, the BCS rules were set up. Nowhere does it say that the top teams will always be selected. A selection like NIU, while a total surprise, indicates two things: ONE - the inclusion of an occasional mid major to the BCS picture gives the appearance of a move toward parity in college football and holds off a damaging court battle that the NCAA can't afford. TWO - putting my alma mater at #15 indicates a desire by those casting their votes in the polls to protest the control of D1 football by about 30 or 40 teams rather than all 124. This controversy has nothing whatsoever to do with football but has everything to do with competitiveness. As long as the strongest schools get the exposure and the money, they will draw the best players and parity will not be achieved. Think of what would happen if there were no NFL draft: the top 5 or 6 richest teams would acquire all the best players, parity would be lost and the game would suffer as a result. For the good of D1 college football, an occasional mid major needs to have a chance to perform on the big stage - its not that big of a price to pay and it sure as heck beats a Supreme Court ruling that would possibly resuly in the reorganization of the NCAA and the AQ conferences.

Wisconsin is there because They are the Big 10 Champions. They may be there by default because of Ohio St and Penn St. being on probation, but they are still "Big" Champions after taking Nebraska to the woodshed.
The rose Bowl must take the Big 10 Champion plan and simple. Louisville is in the same position, they are the Big East Champions. like it or not it is what it is.

NIU played by the rules and won. Why should they be excluded? I'm a Texas Aggie and you won't find many of us complaining. It's not just Herbie. ESPN as a whole has become to big and has to much at stake money wise with the bowls to give NIU any credit. It is all about the money.

I think it is crappy that the Bowl system is the way it is, but hey congrats to NIU. In no way do I think they, FSU, Wisconsin & Louisville should jump Georgia, LSU, TAM, Oklahoma for bowls. But that is they way the bowl are laid out. At least we are going to a playoff system, although I beleive it should be 8 teams and not 4!!

The BCS system and the contracts the major bowls have with conferences have skewed the favor to the top 10 to 15 teams in the country. I would prefer to see the top 10 final BCS schools go to the major bowls with the top two playing for the championship at this time. By the rules Northern Illinois is eligible for an at large BCS bowl. They did what they had to do to get in that position. As an Alabama fan I think that the playoff in 2014 should be at least an 8 team playoff. The four team will only bring about the same arguments and bias that has been shown in past with the BCS. If anyone has a complaint it is the University of Georgia.

A choice like NI to play a mojor bowl kills any excitement for everyone except the NI folks. How many people are going to spend big bucks to go see this matchup. It's a lose lose for Florida State. FS wins "so what". They lose "OMG". TV ratings will stink also. The system is broken. Everyone knows that. See the small schools want it both ways. They want to play in weak conferences against subpar teams yet they want a piece of the big pie when bowl season comes around. If that is your goal then get into a major conference and play someone. Who do you think you are ND?

Herbstreet is right. Fans should be treated to bowl games between the best teams in the country. Because a team defeats Rio Grande River Valley Prep School doesn't prove anything. Leave out Georgia? Leave out Oklahoma? Texas A&M? Who on NIU's team has been nominated for the Heisman? Kirk Herbstreet is not biased, he is just being realistic!

Jordan Lynch (QB at NIU)was nominated for the Heisman (1771 yds rushing, 2962 yds passing - 38 more yards passing and he becomes the first QB in College football history to pass for 3000 and rush for 1500 in one season)

Ask Herbie, how he was knocked out of the game when he played a MAC School when he was the starting QB for Ohio St. BGSU held them to 200 total yards on offense and they barley won 17-6. I hope NIU beats the breaks of FSU!!!

Interesting that the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers is Kaepernick is from Nevada...also, Aaron Rogers was at Butte Junior College before he went on...I took 4 high school football players to the UCLA/Nebraska game last fall - I am a Bruin - after the game I got them down on the field so they could see there is not that much difference between themselves and the players in size..it is the level the intensity they play to. One of the boys will play D 2...one of the others could play for the Bruins..but because we live in a small town in northern california and he is from a poor rural family he was never pointed towards college. To watch him play is amazing. I am sure that Northern Illinois will hold up their end of the bargain just fine. Unless we go to the 65 team format like the NCAA Basketball tourney how else can we justify so many teams in Division 1? If you must be in the group of about 20 that everyone talks about then why not let them have their own league? Otherwise the small fry need their shot..be it Northern Illinois or Boise State...

What's really sad is putting Alabama in the National Championship Game. It's fairly common and accepted knowledge that the best 1-loss team in the country is Oregon. But wait! I forgot: they're a West Coast team. That just wouldn't play well with the money boys, would it? As a matter of fact, it is doubtful that Alabama could handle Stanford. Oh my-another West Coast team. Sorry. I've lost my manners.

I'm personally happy as heck about it, and I'll be rooting for NIU to win. Anything that exposes this BCS for the rigged, high-money, big-names-only TV ratings-driven sham that it is. A real real playoff is what we deserve and until we get it I'm all for the "busters" messing things up. Nobody thought Appalachian State could beat Michigan until they did it; point being, it should always, always be settled on the field, no matter what a computer says.

This BCS system is far from perfect, we all know that. But it is what it is and everyone needs to try to make this system work as best as it can. Herbstreit does NOTHING to help that process along by his comments here. NIU deserves a lot more respect than this.

Boo hoo Herbie, OU lost twice at home and barely beat OSU in overtime at home. Do your homework. These tradition rich schools get a free ride on past glory years, this is supposed to be about what you accomplished in 2012. Oh yea there so called hardship case from Fresno State who won the TCU game got jailed right after the game.
