According to ESPN, Manziel is the first freshman quarterback ever to win on the road against a number one team. He makes incredible throws, short and deep, with near perfect placement. And that is not even his best talent. Johnny Football is the most evasive player in college football (see video below). He finished with 345 total yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions against Alabama. Manziel is also the leading rusher in the defense talent heavy SEC.
Post game, Alabama coach Nick Saban talked about Manziel's ability during broken plays, "That’s the kind of player he is. The players have to know that they have to contain him, that he is going to scramble and that he is very elusive. He is instinctive in the pocket, and he’s also fast." (RollTide.com)
Kansas State QB Collin Klein has led the Heisman race in recent weeks and I was on the Klein train earlier than many others this season, but I am now considering Manziel as my frontrunner. Simply put, the Texas A&M quarterback is the most outstanding player that I have watched in college football this season and fits the description of a Heisman Trophy winner.
Unfortunately, I do not have an official Heisman ballot, but I vote in the less talked about Maxwell Award for College Player of the Year and can nominate players for the FWAA All-America Team. Right now, it is coming down to the wire between Klein and Manziel, but Oregon RB Kenjon Barner still has an outside chance.
Dubbed Johnny Football by Aggie fans, Manziel is a fun player to watch and will probably be playing college football for a while since he is just a redshirt freshman. We have to wonder if he could be the first freshman ever to win the highly coveted Heisman Trophy? Either way, Heisman winner or not, now we know why they call him Johnny Football.
