The College Football Universe Preseason Top 126 is now released. The ranking is simply based on which teams I perceive as the best coming into the 2013 season. This is not a prediction of the final season rankings and it is not based on strength of schedule.

In last night's Fiesta Bowl, there was a rare occurrence. For just the fourth time known in college football history, a one-point safety was scored by Oregon against Kansas State.

A one-point safety can be scored on an extra point attempt if the team on defense obtains possession of the ball as a result of a turnover such as a blocked kick, interception, or fumble and retreats back or laterals the ball back into the end zone followed by the player possessing the ball either being tackled down, downing the ball, or fumbling the ball out of the back of the end zone. Another very extreme way to score a one-point safety would be if an offensive player was sacked in their own end zone on an extra point which is 98 yards away, but that type has never occurred.

I just coincidentally looked up the one-point safety rule last week since an article from CFU was referenced by the blog called The One-Point Safety. The author of the blog, Travis Normand, witnessed live the one-point safety in the 2004 Texas vs. Texas A&M game. Once seeing it last night, I was shocked more, not by the surprise of the rule, but by it actually happening after I recently looked it up. It is the most rare way to score in football.

Watch around the 3:00 minute mark of the video below for the one-point safety in the Fiesta Bowl. Oregon's extra point kick was blocked and the ball was carried back in the end zone by a Kansas State defender.

According to all major polls, Johnny "Football" Manziel is the current leader in what has been an up and down Heisman race this season. The Texas A&M Aggies sensation has a strong chance to become the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. The university is also campaigning for Manziel as Heisman and has a webpage with a YouTube video dedicated to the effort. Manziel has now climbed to a heavy favorite coming into the closing week of the Aggies' season.

According to HeismanPundit.com:

“He (Manziel) beat the No. 1 team in the FBS and the No. 3 team in the FCS in consecutive weeks,” said one voter. “What’s next, the Cowboys?”
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o still has a shot to win. If Johnny Football falls apart against Missouri while Te'o pulls off some big plays at USC, then the he could have a chance at a come from behind victory for the Heisman. According to the USA Today Survey, Te'o and Manziel are tied in number one votes. But right now, the Trophy is Johnny Football's to lose.

Collin Klein's stock dropped drastically after his three interception performance that ended with a 52-24 loss at Baylor. The Kansas State QB went from first last week to currently third while losing 124 total points in the three polls listed below. Klein will probably still go to New York, but his chances of winning the Trophy have grown slim very fast.

There are a some new additions to the poll, but they will probably not be finalists. Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch received votes in both the USA Today and ESPN polls. Last week, I wrote about Lynch and the Heisman campaign that NIU has put out for him.

Listed in the combined poll results below are polls from HeismanPundit/CBSSports.com, ESPN, and USA Today combined together. There are 928 official voters for the Heisman Trophy.

With just a few weeks left, Collin Klein has a strong lead in the Heisman race and will have to seriously underachieve over his last two games to lose it. The Wildcats' quarterback is being recognized for his leadership skills as well as his impressive output.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said, “They respond to him, not only by what he does, but also what he addresses them about in the areas other than just football... I think Collin has manifested a leadership style that encompasses far more than just football.”

Johnny Manziel is really the only other player that has a chance at winning the trophy, but he will get less credit for facing weak competition in his last two games and Klein must falter for Johnny Football to have a chance. Of course, Manziel soared in the Heisman polls after he led Texas A&M to an upset over previous number one Alabama. The game performance was valiant enough to be designated as a Heisman "moment", but he needs some outside help to be the first freshman to win it.

Kenjon Barner dropped from two to four after a poor performance against California. Barner finished with just 65 yards on 20 carries. His teammate QB Marcus Mariota stole the spotlight with six passing touchdowns in the game.

There are a few newcomers to the polls listed below. Marcus Mariota, Colby Cameron, Giovani Bernard, and Montee Ball all made appearances this week after being left off previously. None really have a shot at winning the Heisman Trophy, but there is a chance that one could make a late surge for a trip to New York. Ball was a finalist last season.

Alabama QB AJ McCarron fell from fourth last week to completely out of the combined poll results. Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater was the only other player to fall out, but had just one point last week.

Listed in the combined poll results below are polls from HeismanPundit/CBSSports.com, ESPN, and USA Today combined together. There are 928 official voters for the Heisman Trophy.

Projections for rankings beginning week 12:

Projected BCS Top Five
  1. Kansas State
  2. Oregon
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Georgia
  5. Texas A&M*
*On the BCS and Coaches Poll top five bubble: Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU.

Projected USA Today Coaches Poll Top Four
  1. Oregon
  2. Kansas State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Georgia

Projected AP Top Five
  1. Oregon
  2. Kansas State
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Georgia
  5. Ohio State

The Kansas State Wildcats will be the new BCS number one team with Oregon, Notre Dame, and Georgia each also moving up a slot. However, the number one ranking will be split; the major human polls including the USA Today Coaches Poll, Harris Interactive Top 25, and AP Top 25 (non-BCS component) will all favor Oregon as number one.

Of course, the big shake up is because of the stunning loss by current number one Alabama to Texas A&M. The huge upset puts Texas A&M on the BCS top five bubble and Alabama as well. Florida and LSU also both have a chance to land at number five.

The Aggies highest ranking in the computers for week 11 was at 10 and their lowest was 16th. Expect those numbers to skyrocket after their victory over the Tide.

It just depends on how willing voters are to put Texas A&M over Florida or LSU, the only two teams to beat the Aggies this season. I have the Aggies projected at five, but basically all four -Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU- have just about an equal chance of being ranked in the BCS top five. Alabama is always a voter favorite so it would be no surprise to see them stay in the top five or higher.

As mentioned on the previous post, Northern Illinois will be ranked in the BCS Standings since Northwestern and TCU lost. If the Huskies do land outside the BCS Top 25, then it will not be by much.

***Update Nov 11 Sunday 3:32 AM ET*** ESPN Brad Edwards' Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Alabama. Basically, all four -Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU- have a chance of being ranked in the BCS top five.

***Update Nov 11 Sunday 4:12 PM ET*** Official USA Today Coaches Top Five: 1 Oregon, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Alabama. Official AP Top Five: 1 Oregon, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Alabama, and 5 Georgia. Texas A&M did not get much love in the Coaches Poll which is astonishing since they beat the number one team on the road. In the Coaches Poll, the Aggies went from 16 to 14 after defeating Mississippi St, but only went from 14 to 10 after the Alabama win! Kansas State should still be the BCS number one, but the Aggies will probably be somewhere inbetween 5 and 10 in the BCS. CBS Sports Jerry Palm's Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Alabama, and 5 Georgia. The next three ranked in his projections are Florida, LSU, and Texas A&M.

***Update Nov 11 Sunday 8:43 PM ET*** Official BCS Top 10: 1 Kansas State .967, 2 Oregon .950, 3 Notre Dame .940, 4 Alabama .853, 5 Georgia .833, 6 Florida .796, 7 LSU .733, 8 Texas A&M .662, 9 South Carolina .635, and 10 Florida State .607. Aggies did not get much respect from voters for the win in Tuscaloosa. I wonder how the computers ranked them. Top three are very tight. Notre Dame and Oregon are only .010 apart!

There are unlikely to be any changes in the BCS top five beginning week 12 unless there are some unexpected upsets this weekend. Four out of the top five BCS teams are playing on the road, but mostly against weak competition. Week 11 opponents of Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon have a combined record of 7-21.

Kansas State is the most likely of the top five to lose this weekend due to the uncertainty of QB Collin Klein and they are favored by the smallest point spread of the top five teams.

If Texas A&M was to upset Alabama, then they would jump into the top ten of the BCS Standings and possibly the top five. But it would be a tall order for Johnny “Football” and the Aggies since they are 15.5 point underdogs playing in Tuscaloosa.

Oregon jumping Kansas State has a real chance of happening in the long run, but is definitely not a sure thing. The computers and voters will have to keep amping up support for the Ducks over the Wildcats.

The Ducks may be number two in the human polls, but are not a consensus two so they still have points to gain. The BCS averages goes by points computed to a decimal. The “eye test” may ultimately decide which team will be ranked second if all the top teams stay undefeated.

“As long as they’re No. 2 in the polls, you have to like Oregon,” CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm said. “That’s what drives this thing.” (USA Today)

As far as the computers, the opponents of Oregon and Kansas State, already played and future, will play an important factor. Especially for Oregon since they currently have the strongest opponents left, but if any of them fall further in rank, it will be even closer. For week 11, the Sagarin BCS Ratings had Oregon at number seven, the lowest of the top five teams in the BCS Standings.

Kansas State’s remaining opponents win-loss record is 17-9, but Oregon’s remaining owl is almost identical at 17-10. The Ducks do have an extra game due to the Pac-12 Championship, but the Wildcats have Texas scheduled on the same date so voters will not be swayed.

If Notre Dame defeats USC in a couple weeks, it will hurt Oregon. The Irish would probably still not jump the Ducks. But it would make it more difficult for Oregon to overtake Kansas State at number two since it would lower the value of USC as a past opponent for the Ducks. As for the Irish, they are caught in a rankings stalemate unless a team ahead of them loses.

The decline of USC has hurt the strength of schedule of both Notre Dame and Oregon. As far as AP Polls, no preseason number one has ended their season outside the top 20 since 1964 according to collegepollarchive.com (WSJ). The Trojans are definitely on the verge of doing so with three losses already while currently ranked 21st in the AP and 19th in the BCS. Their final three opponents have a combined record of 21-6 with two in the top 25.

If Northwestern and TCU lose this week, Northern Illinois will break the BCS Standings. BCS No. 25 Toledo already lost this week. Northwestern is ranked at 24 for the week 11 BCS Standings and TCU is just outside of the Harris Poll. Both are projected underdogs in this week’s games according to oddsmakers. Northern Illinois is off this week so it would open a spot for them to break the top 25.

Depending on weekend results, I may post updates of projections before the official BCS Standings come out and sometime after the Coaches Poll noon release time. Updates will be listed below in this post.

Other Projections: Nebraska will be ranked in the top 25 of the Coaches Poll and BCS Standings.

Kansas State will be the new number two in the BCS Standings for week 10. The Wildcats also are beginning to gain traction in the AP and Coaches polls. AP voter and ESPN analyst, Kirk Herbstreit, stated during the Notre Dame at Oklahoma game that K-State should be ranked second.

Nearly half of the undefeated teams (5 of 11) lost this week: Florida, Mississippi State, Ohio, Oregon State, and Rutgers. Three of the big four unbeatens in the  BCS top 10 - Kansas State, Oregon, and Notre Dame - will continue to closely vie for position in the rankings.

Oregon and Notre Dame will be approximately .0050 to .0150 apart from each other in the BCS Standings, no matter who lands at third. Oregon's win over Colorado did not help them any in the BCS Standings. Colorado is only ranked 157th in the Sagarin College Football Ratings, one of six computers in the BCS.

Notre Dame defeated Oklahoma, number eight in both the BCS and Sagarin Ratings, so the computers will highly favor the them. If there is enough voter influence for the Irish, then they could land at two, but I have not noticed a huge push for Notre Dame to jump Oregon quite yet.

Nebraska will be ranked in the top 25 of the Coaches Poll and BCS Standings. The Cornhuskers were the second team out of the Harris Poll and Coaches poll last week, both components of the BCS. After their win against Michigan, they should easily jump back into the rankings.

I am more confident in these projected rankings than the last couple weeks' projections, but who knows, the BCS and polls are full of surprises. ESPN's Brad Edwards is projecting the top four to be 1. Alabama, 2. Kansas State, 3. Notre Dame, and 4. Oregon, but he must be counting on voters also favoring the Irish.

I may post an update again before the BCS Standings come out sometime after the Coaches Poll noon release time. Updates will now be listed in the post rather than the comments section.

***Update Oct 28 Sunday 3 PM ET*** Official AP and Coaches Poll top five: 1. Alabama, 2. Oregon, 3. Kansas State, 4. Notre Dame and 5. LSU. It is going to be tight between Oregon and Notre Dame for three in the BCS.

***Update Oct 28 Sunday 4:55 PM ET*** The voters might end up putting Notre Dame at three in the BCS, but I am still not sure. Even though the Irish did not jump the Ducks in the human polls, they did get a boost in points. Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has Notre Dame projected at third in the BCS by a .0077 margin over Oregon. It can go either way and may even be closer than Palm's projection.

***Update Oct 28 Sunday 9:40 PM ET*** Official BCS top five: 1. Alabama, 2. Kansas State, 3. Notre Dame, 4. Oregon, and 5. LSU. Notre Dame beat out Oregon for the three spot by just .0011! My BCS bubble teams keep bursting the bubble lately, but it does not bother me much being off by so little. With the Ducks and Irish in such close competition, expect a good chance of Oregon taking the number three slot back as the season goes on.

Follow College Football Universe late Saturday nights and early Sunday mornings for projections before the official polls are released.

Here is a list of the 12 most dynamic Heisman Trophy contenders through week four of the 2012 college football season. It is based on the contenders that along with having gaudy numbers also make dynamic and meaningful plays on the field. This is not a predictor, but there is useful information given on the Heisman race. The watch will be updated near season's end and reduced to around four to six contenders.

The Dynamic Dozen includes a variety of position players with quarterbacks leading the way at five listed. After just four weeks, there are no definitive front-runners, but Heisman hype is beginning to pick up for some. However, there are a few players from the preseason list that have risen while there are many newcomers in addition.

Many of the favorites from my preseason Dynamic Dozen Heisman Trophy contenders have fallen out including all of the top five and eight total. USC quarterback Matt Barkley may be the biggest disappointment of the preseason favorites early on; he has had four interceptions with only two touchdowns in his last two games. Wisconsin running back Montee Ball has been a huge surprise to everyone as well with dismal numbers this season (3.9 yards per carry).

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o recently had his name thrown into Heisman consideration. He is a picture perfect tackler that is morphing into a good all around linebacker as exemplified by his two interceptions against Michigan last Saturday. Te'o is possibly the most valuable defensive player in the country along with Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones which is also in the Dynamic Dozen. Of course as everyone knows, a defensive player winning the Heisman Trophy is a longshot, but if Te'o maintains his current pace, it will be hard to keep him out of New York.

I have another player included, offensive lineman Barrett Jones from Alabama, that is an even farther stretch than the linebackers listed. I highly doubt he will win the trophy, but he is one of the best college football players in the nation and is worth mentioning. There has been some rumbling about Jones as a Heisman candidate

As previously stated, the list is quarterback heavy as usual for a Heisman race. Four of the top five are QBs with Kansas State's Collin Klein coming in at number one. "Optimus" Klein is also number two on Heisman Pundit and ranked third on ESPN Heisman Watch. Kansas State's victory over Oklahoma helped the talented athlete garner some national attention. I had Klein on preseason watch despite him going under the radar on many others and he was not even included on the preseason Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list

West Virginia QB Geno Smith has some of the most impressive numbers in the nation early on, but the Mountaineers' schedule gets more difficult so it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his output. Florida State's EJ Manuel jumped into the Heisman conversation after the Seminoles' win over the Tigers in which he had a stellar outing (482 total yards vs Clemson). Smith is number one and Manuel number two in the Heisman race according to ESPN.

*Games against FCS teams were not projected. However, teams were given a win for FCS games to show a better depiction of the projected season record, but this does not help in accuracy since FCS teams do win some games.
*Bowl games are not projected.

Oklahoma State is projected to have an undefeated season, but their games against Oklahoma and Missouri are projected to be very close. Texas A&M at Kansas State is too close to call and that is why there are two projections for both teams. Texas A&M is possibly the most overrated team in college football numerically speaking. Their rankings in the preseason polls must be mostly due to the "eye test" and speculation.
