Boy oh boy, this is the weekend the BCS pollsters and computers get tested when the final BCS Standings for 2012 are revealed. ESPN's Brad Edwards showed real uncertainty in his Bowl projections last night and CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has Northern Illinois out of the BCS top 16 by just .0021! The real truth is that there is hope for the Huskies, but how much is really unknown. The losses by BCS No. 12 Nebraska and No. 16 UCLA is what have given the Huskies hope. They also defeated BCS No. 17 Kent State in a dramatic double overtime victory for the MAC Championship on Friday. Boise State, at 20 for week 14, also has an outside chance to bust the BCS. Of course, news of NIU coach Dave Doeren's announced departure to NC State may hurt them in the polls some, but there were very unfortunate tragic occurrences on Saturday that kept a lot of minor news off sports tickers on most channels. However, human polls in the BCS seem to not give much credit to non-BCS teams. Since it is so close and to contradict the others, I am projecting Northern Illinois in to bust the BCS at the 16th spot, but we will know more mid-day today and officially when the BCS Standings come out Sunday night during the BCS Selection Show at 7:30 PM ET on ESPN. Three of the top five teams in the final BCS Standings could be SEC teams, but at least three of the top six will be. Palm has Kansas State securely projected at fifth while I am not as sure of it since I have Georgia at the five spot with the Wildcats on the bubble, but Palm has been on target. In my opinion, I have been one of the most informative BCS analysts over the past two seasons and fairly accurate, but the most accurate is Jerry Palm. Brads Edwards is off more than Palm, but has gotten better some this season and has waffled more when he has been uncertain rather than give out wrong projections. I will post updates after the Coaches Poll mid-day release time and after the official BCS Standings are announced. Updates will be listed below in this post or you can bookmark the Projections page. ***Update Dec 2 Sunday 3:20 PM ET*** Official AP top five: 1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Ohio State, 4 Florida, and 5 Oregon. Official USA Today Coaches Poll top five: 1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Oregon, 4 Florida, and 5 Georgia. The projected Coaches Poll top five was correct and Georgia is just 20 points behind Oregon for the fifth spot in the AP Poll top five. UCLA dropped to 19th from 16th in the Coaches Poll and Nebraska dropped to 21st from 13th while Northern Illinois is ranked 16th. The BCS Selection Show is going to be very interesting. CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has Northern Illinois projected at the 17th spot in the BCS Standings, just .0033 behind projected No.16 Nebraska and .0051 behind UCLA, projected at 15. Both Nebraska and UCLA lost Saturday with the Cornhuskers being humiliated by Wisconsin. I am sticking with my projections, but NIU may get shut out of the BCS by an extremely small margin. If the Huskies do make it, then they will be in the Orange Bowl. ***Update Dec 2 Sunday 5:35 PM ET*** According to Bleacher Report, Northern Illinois to play Florida State in the Orange Bowl!!! I was the only expert that I know of to have them projected early this morning!!! ***Update Dec 2 Sunday 9:38 PM ET*** Official BCS top five: 1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Florida, 4 Oregon, and 5 Kansas State. With last weekend's wild results in college football, many are left wondering how various scenarios could play out for the BCS Championship. It is certain that Notre Dame and Alabama will make it to the national championship if they both win out, but if one loses, BCS chaos could erupt again. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said, "Now we don't have to answer questions about style points or politics or anything like that. We get a chance to play for the national championship- provided we win this week." (USA Today) Georgia also controls their own destiny; win out and they are in the big game. Trying to not look too far ahead, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said, "We're just focusing on today really, and then we'll focus on tomorrow. It's one day at a time." There are still others looming that have a good shot if one of the top teams slip up. Florida and Oregon are the next two most likely to move up if a falter happens. Kansas State and LSU are distant longshots, but only if there is BCS armageddon with all sorts of crazy upsets. Ohio State has been steadily creeping up the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and are on the bubble to break the AP top three for week 14. If Ohio State blows out Michigan by 10 points or more and Georgia only defeats Georgia Tech by single digits, the Buckeyes will move up to three; Only 24 points separated the two teams in the AP Top 25 for week 13. Ohio State would move to three by default if Georgia loses or after the SEC Championship game when either the Tide or Bulldogs lose. Of course, Michigan has a chance to halt Ohio State's rise in the top 25 if they pull off the upset. When Ohio State coach Urban Meyer was asked about the pressure of the Michigan rivalry game and a possible AP national championship, he said, "I'm concerned, but the good thing is I've been coaching for a while now, and nothing you can control other than getting ready to go play the game. So I think you learn that along the journey. I think, if it was the first rodeo and all that, I'd be worried about this, worried about that...So I am concerned, but you've got to move forward and do the best you can." Depending on weekend results, I may post updates of projections before the official BCS Standings come out and sometime after the Coaches Poll noon release time. Updates will be listed below in this post or you can bookmark the Projections page. ***Update Nov 25 Sunday 12:45 AM ET*** Notre Dame defeated USC 22-13. Alabama and Georgia both won today. The BCS National Championship will be Notre Dame vs winner of Alabama and Georgia. Projections remain the same as posted below. Florida won so they will stay at BCS number four. Ohio State is still on the bubble for the AP top three, but I am not projecting them at third since Georgia won handily over Georgia Tech. ***Update Nov 25 Sunday 2:20 PM ET*** Official AP top five: 1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Georgia, 4 Ohio State, and 5 Florida. Notre Dame at USC Alabama vs Auburn Georgia vs Georgia Tech Florida at Florida State Oregon at Oregon State LSU at Arkansas
| Notre Dame will be number one for the first time in the BCS ranking era. The luck of the Irish may be a curse to other teams. Notre Dame needed some luck to climb up in the rankings which meant a loss by Oregon or Kansas State. Curse the Wildcats and Ducks. Baylor upset Kansas State 52-24 in Waco, TX and Stanford upset Oregon 17-14 in Eugene, OR after an overtime session. Notre Dame is now just one win away from the BCS championship. It will also be the first time the Irish are number one in a major poll since November 1993. The SEC and Alabama are right back in the BCS Championship game hunt. Here is what I wrote in the last post: "The Tide and Bulldogs need two of the top three to lose in order to help ensure the SEC another trip to the BCS National Championship. In the realm of college football, it is definitely possible, but right now, the SEC teams are on the outside looking in." The perfect storm happened for Alabama and Notre Dame. In a way, it is only fitting to see traditionally rich programs at the top of college football once again. Georgia still has a chance for a berth in the BCS Championship. If the Bulldogs defeat the Tide in the SEC title game and win against Georgia Tech in week 13, they will climb to at least second in the BCS. Florida also has an outside shot if enough losses occur, but it is somewhat doubtful. For example, if Georgia loses to Georgia Tech, but beats Alabama while Florida defeats Florida State, then the Gators could end up in the national championship. It would be wacky, but this is college football. An easier route for the Gators would be if Notre Dame loses to USC, because then Florida would jump up to two if they win out since either Alabama or Georgia will lose in the SEC Championship. There will not be a BCS Buster this season. Louisiana Tech lost to Utah State so their hopes of busting the BCS are over. You can also check out the last post here for more information coming into this weekend. I may post an update sometime after the Coaches Poll noon release time. Updates will be listed below in this post or you can bookmark the Projections page. ***Update Nov 18 Sunday 1:20 AM ET*** ESPN Brad Edwards' BCS Top Five Projections: 1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Georgia, 4 Florida, and 5 Kansas State. Projections for rankings beginning week 13: BCS Projected Top Five 1. Kansas State 2. Oregon 3. Notre Dame 4. Alabama 5. Georgia *If favorites win.Oregon will gain some on Kansas State, but not enough to overtake the number one spot unless the Wildcats have an unimpressive performance or a loss while the Ducks keep dominating. They are currently .0177 apart, but that should narrow some after this week. Notre Dame is only .0101 behind Oregon in the BCS Standings; however, it does not look like they can jump to two unless a loss is accumulated by the Ducks or the Irish rack up some major late-season style points in the human polls. Alabama and Georgia each have worthless games this weekend with both playing non-FBS teams. The Tide and Bulldogs need two of the top three to lose in order to help ensure the SEC another trip to the BCS National Championship. In the realm of college football, it is definitely possible, but right now, the SEC teams are on the outside looking in. BCS beware, Louisiana Tech has a chance at being a Buster. There are two ways the Bulldogs could land in a BCS Bowl- by finishing in the top 12 of the final standings or if they finish in the top 16 as the WAC champion and higher than an AQ conference champion. La Tech has a shot at being ranked higher than a Big East or Big Ten champion in the final BCS Standings before the bowls. The remaining opponents for the Bulldogs have a combined record of 16-4. Louisville currently has a .0248 lead on Louisiana Tech in the BCS so it will be a challenge. "I think if we win out, we'll have a shot," said Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes, "I think we're going to need to point out to some people... the schedule we've played and the teams we've played." (USA Today) There are various scenarios to determine the Big East Champion, but right now, Louisville is the highest ranked Big East school in the BCS and Rutgers has the best conference record. Louisville at Rutgers on Nov 29 looks like the most likely route for the Big East Championship unless a lot of losses occur. Cincinnati is favored to win against Rutgers this weekend so it could come down to a tiebreaker between multiple teams. In the Big Ten, Nebraska leads the Legends and Michigan still has a chance to win the division if the Cornhuskers lose. Wisconsin has already secured the Leaders division and a spot in the Big Ten Championship. The MAC could eventually have two teams in either the BCS or AP Top 25 rankings. Last week, Northern Illinois was on the bubble to break the BCS Top 25, but came up a little short. Instead, fellow conference foe Kent State broke the AP Top 25. The Huskies are still one of the first teams out of the BCS and AP rankings. If each team wins their final games, they could both be ranked for the MAC Championship. | | The Kansas State Wildcats will be the new BCS number one team with Oregon, Notre Dame, and Georgia each also moving up a slot. However, the number one ranking will be split; the major human polls including the USA Today Coaches Poll, Harris Interactive Top 25, and AP Top 25 (non-BCS component) will all favor Oregon as number one. Of course, the big shake up is because of the stunning loss by current number one Alabama to Texas A&M. The huge upset puts Texas A&M on the BCS top five bubble and Alabama as well. Florida and LSU also both have a chance to land at number five. The Aggies highest ranking in the computers for week 11 was at 10 and their lowest was 16th. Expect those numbers to skyrocket after their victory over the Tide. It just depends on how willing voters are to put Texas A&M over Florida or LSU, the only two teams to beat the Aggies this season. I have the Aggies projected at five, but basically all four - Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU- have just about an equal chance of being ranked in the BCS top five. Alabama is always a voter favorite so it would be no surprise to see them stay in the top five or higher. As mentioned on the previous post, Northern Illinois will be ranked in the BCS Standings since Northwestern and TCU lost. If the Huskies do land outside the BCS Top 25, then it will not be by much. ***Update Nov 11 Sunday 3:32 AM ET*** ESPN Brad Edwards' Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Alabama. Official AP Top Five: 1 Oregon, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Alabama, and 5 Georgia. Texas A&M did not get much love in the Coaches Poll which is astonishing since they beat the number one team on the road. In the Coaches Poll, the Aggies went from 16 to 14 after defeating Mississippi St, but only went from 14 to 10 after the Alabama win! Kansas State should still be the BCS number one, but the Aggies will probably be somewhere inbetween 5 and 10 in the BCS. CBS Sports Jerry Palm's Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Alabama, and 5 Georgia. The next three ranked in his projections are Florida, LSU, and Texas A&M. ***Update Nov 11 Sunday 8:43 PM ET*** Official BCS Top 10: 1 Kansas State .967, 2 Oregon .950, 3 Notre Dame .940, 4 Alabama .853, 5 Georgia .833, 6 Florida .796, 7 LSU .733, 8 Texas A&M .662, 9 South Carolina .635, and 10 Florida State .607. Aggies did not get much respect from voters for the win in Tuscaloosa. I wonder how the computers ranked them. Top three are very tight. Notre Dame and Oregon are only .010 apart! There are unlikely to be any changes in the BCS top five beginning week 12 unless there are some unexpected upsets this weekend. Four out of the top five BCS teams are playing on the road, but mostly against weak competition. Week 11 opponents of Georgia, Notre Dame, and Oregon have a combined record of 7-21. Kansas State is the most likely of the top five to lose this weekend due to the uncertainty of QB Collin Klein and they are favored by the smallest point spread of the top five teams. If Texas A&M was to upset Alabama, then they would jump into the top ten of the BCS Standings and possibly the top five. But it would be a tall order for Johnny “Football” and the Aggies since they are 15.5 point underdogs playing in Tuscaloosa. Oregon jumping Kansas State has a real chance of happening in the long run, but is definitely not a sure thing. The computers and voters will have to keep amping up support for the Ducks over the Wildcats. The Ducks may be number two in the human polls, but are not a consensus two so they still have points to gain. The BCS averages goes by points computed to a decimal. The “eye test” may ultimately decide which team will be ranked second if all the top teams stay undefeated. “As long as they’re No. 2 in the polls, you have to like Oregon,” CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm said. “That’s what drives this thing.” (USA Today) As far as the computers, the opponents of Oregon and Kansas State, already played and future, will play an important factor. Especially for Oregon since they currently have the strongest opponents left, but if any of them fall further in rank, it will be even closer. For week 11, the Sagarin BCS Ratings had Oregon at number seven, the lowest of the top five teams in the BCS Standings. Kansas State’s remaining opponents win-loss record is 17-9, but Oregon’s remaining owl is almost identical at 17-10. The Ducks do have an extra game due to the Pac-12 Championship, but the Wildcats have Texas scheduled on the same date so voters will not be swayed. If Notre Dame defeats USC in a couple weeks, it will hurt Oregon. The Irish would probably still not jump the Ducks. But it would make it more difficult for Oregon to overtake Kansas State at number two since it would lower the value of USC as a past opponent for the Ducks. As for the Irish, they are caught in a rankings stalemate unless a team ahead of them loses. The decline of USC has hurt the strength of schedule of both Notre Dame and Oregon. As far as AP Polls, no preseason number one has ended their season outside the top 20 since 1964 according to collegepollarchive.com (WSJ). The Trojans are definitely on the verge of doing so with three losses already while currently ranked 21st in the AP and 19th in the BCS. Their final three opponents have a combined record of 21-6 with two in the top 25. If Northwestern and TCU lose this week, Northern Illinois will break the BCS Standings. BCS No. 25 Toledo already lost this week. Northwestern is ranked at 24 for the week 11 BCS Standings and TCU is just outside of the Harris Poll. Both are projected underdogs in this week’s games according to oddsmakers. Northern Illinois is off this week so it would open a spot for them to break the top 25. Depending on weekend results, I may post updates of projections before the official BCS Standings come out and sometime after the Coaches Poll noon release time. Updates will be listed below in this post. ***Update Nov 11 Sunday 1:25 AM ET*** Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Texas A&M*. *On the BCS and Coaches Poll top five bubble: Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU. Here is the full updated post with more information. ***Update Nov 11 Sunday 3:30 AM ET*** ESPN Brad Edwards' Projected BCS Top Five: 1 Kansas State, 2 Oregon, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Alabama. Basically, all four -Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, and LSU- have a chance of being ranked in the BCS top five. Alabama is always a voter favorite so it would be no surprise to see them stay in the top five or higher. Here is the full updated post with more information.***Update Nov 11 Sunday 4:15 PM ET*** Official USA Today Coaches Top Five: 1 Oregon, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Georgia, and 5 Alabama. Here is the full updated post with more information.***Update Nov 11 Sunday 8:44 PM ET*** Official BCS Top 10: 1 Kansas State .967, 2 Oregon .950, 3 Notre Dame .940, 4 Alabama .853, 5 Georgia .833, 6 Florida .796, 7 LSU .733, 8 Texas A&M .662, 9 South Carolina .635, and 10 Florida State .607. Aggies did not get much respect from voters for the win in Tuscaloosa. I wonder how the computers ranked them. Top three are very tight. Notre Dame and Oregon are only .010 apart! *Texas A&M would be on the bubble for the BCS top five and definitely ranked in the BCS top 10. |
Tusk Projected BCS & AP Top 4: 1. LSU 2. Alabama 3. Arkansas 4. Stanford* Other BCS projections: Notre Dame will be ranked in the top 25. Houston will be ranked in the top 10. Clemson will drop out of the top 10. *On the Bubble: Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State are on the bubble for the BCS top five and have a chance at the four spot over Stanford due to the volatility in the rankings as the result of numerous ranked teams losing. I wrote a blog during the off season in which I called the SEC West division the Dirty South of college football because it’s just plain nasty. Week 13 will prove my point with LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas as the top three ranked teams in college football. What makes it nastier is that Arkansas plays at LSU and Alabama at Auburn to finish up the regular season for SEC football. Number four is up for grabs this week with four losses by top 10 teams leaving the slot open (Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Clemson). I am projecting Stanford to fill the slot with Virginia Tech as the most likely to move up next, but Oklahoma State may stick around in the top five due to the computer rankings or just outside of it. However, all three have a chance at four. Notre Dame will be back in the BCS top 25 after appearing in the USA Today Coaches and AP Top 25 polls coming into this week (note AP poll is not part of the BCS). Florida State, Texas and Southern Mississippi all may drop out of the BCS top 25 leaving a spot open for the Fighting Irish. Arkansas trounced Mississippi State ensuring that LSU will have another high hurdle to jump for the SEC championship. In an awkward situation featuring a tiebreaker between Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas, if Arkansas beats LSU and is ranked number one in the nation, then they still may not get into the SEC championship if Alabama is ranked second. Here is the final three team tiebreaker according to the SEC Digital Network: “The tied team with the highest ranking in the Bowl Championship Series Standings following the last weekend of regular-season games shall be the divisional representative in the SEC Championship Game, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the SEC Championship Game.” Here are the highest to lowest BCS ranking scenarios for Arkansas, LSU, and Alabama to make it to the SEC championship if LSU loses to Arkansas and all three teams are tied in the SEC standings: Arkansas gets in: Arkansas, LSU, and Alabama. LSU, Arkansas, and Alabama. LSU gets in: LSU, Alabama, and Arkansas. Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas. Alabama gets in: Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU. Arkansas, Alabama, and LSU. Note that Arkansas, Alabama, or LSU would not have to qualify for the SEC championship to make it to the BCS National Championship. The probability of an SEC rematch in the BCS is now much more likely unless Alabama is upset by Auburn and there is an upset in the SEC championship.
