It’s April and that means spring football games are well underway. Texas, Virginia, and Baylor all played this past weekend. The Longhorns and Cavaliers were televised on the ESPN network. Texas Tech, Army, and Duke played in March.
The Longhorns played their spring game last Sunday on ESPN2. Multiple quarterbacks got reps, but Garrett Gilbert should be the starter heading into the 2011 season. He performed poorly in the first quarter with throwing an interception. In the second, he tightened his game and completed 3 of 3 passes on a drive down field. Gilbert was more settled after that, but he still seemed somewhat flustered.
However, there is young talent available to back up Gilbert at the quarterback position. Case McCoy, Colt’s younger brother, had a good game passing 9 for 11 with 124 yards and a touchdown according to ESPN. Connor Wood and David Ash also played QB during the game. On the defensive side of the ball, top rated incoming freshman cornerback Quandre Diggs had some big hits.
Virginia had their Orange-Blue game last Saturday on ESPN3. The offense and quarterbacks were out of sync which is somewhat expected in spring ball, but it still may be a concern going into fall. They do boast a solid offensive line returning four starters with a career total of 64 starts. The defense seemed to play well, but I’m not sure how much of that was due to the offense’s sloppiness.
